Description: If it was difficult enough to balance work with life Before Covid (BC), when we could shut an office and classroom door behind us, it became much more difficult as language instruction shifted partially or completely online and many instructors were encouraged to work from home. Language teaching may present particular challenges because of the close relationships and long hours instructors are used to having with their students. An impulse to compensate for the loss of physical co-presence with other kinds of support to students and colleagues may increase the challenges of maintaining healthy boundaries between work and life. In this presentation, we will talk what gets in the way of balancing work with life and what ways each of us have found to respond to those challenges.
About the discussant: Kristine Muñoz is Professor of Hispanic Linguistics and Communication Studies. She has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Colombia since 1987, focusing on issues of personal relationships, persuasion, and discourses of human rights and peace education. She teaches courses on cultural storytelling, Spanish health narratives, culture, language and health, and counternarratives of the city of Medellín.
